Orphans
and Orphanages in Africa
Africa,
as a continent, has the highest number of HIV/AIDS victims in the world,
and the virus continues to spread. So far, the AIDS epidemic has left
13 million orphans in Africa, which is more than anywhere else.
Half of the HIV positive
adults acquire AIDS in their early 30s; they die before the age of 35,
leaving a generation of children to be raised by poor grandparents or
to head their own groups on the streets and rubbish dumps.
The AIDS orphans are
the most vulnerable members of society. In many African countries, few
support systems exist, and even basic services are very inadequate. Consequently,
the orphans are at great risk for illnesses, abuse, and sexual exploitation.
They don't receive proper health care, and they are often malnourished
and very small. Because they are so financially desperate, they often
engage in prostitution as a mean of survival, which means that eventually
they will get infected. And the vicious circle continues. It is now very
clear that Africa faces an enormous problem, and the need is to help,
care, and protect those children.
Children's
Hunger Relief Fund sponsors several projects with the main
goal being to build homes and centers to furnish food, medical care, education,
and a place to belong for African orphans.
